We work hard to make sure wildlife is encouraged in our orchards and none are more welcome than bees and other pollinating insects. As well as the fruit trees we grow our crops from, we also plant pollinating trees and native hedging to encourage bees and other wildlife. At this time of year our orchards are literally buzzing, as bees make their way from one blossom to another and we need lots of sunshine to encourage the bees out of their hives.
In the UK there are around 70 different commercial crops which are dependent on or benefit from bees. The economic value put on honey and bumble bees as a pollinator of all commercial crops is around £200m per year, but to us, it is priceless.
